Infrared saunas and detox: The benefits of a good sweat from an at-home infrared sauna

Feeling tired, worn-down, and out-of-whack? You might be in need of a good detox.

One of the ways to release excess toxins from the body is to sweat it all out. And, a popular method of getting nice and sweaty are saunas.

Traditionally, saunas were heated by steam, typically by heating rocks and pouring water over them. But, thanks to modern technology we are able to use infrared light and heat to more efficiently heat not only the sauna but also the body.

How does an infrared sauna work?

Instead of heating the air around you, an infrared sauna heats your body directly by using infrared heaters and light. This means infrared saunas can heat the body more efficiently than traditional saunas, which rely on heating the air. The heat from an infrared sauna is soaked up by the skin, which raises body temperature deep inside the core and promotes a deeper level of detox than ordinary saunas can provide.

This deeper level of detoxification helps rid the body of excess toxins ranging from heavy metals, chemicals, radioactive particles. It can help relieve symptoms of common illnesses, prevent future illness, and increase overall health and vitality.

If you’re looking to use a sauna for detoxification, you’ll want to choose a sauna that is capable of full-spectrum infrared light, which includes near, mid, and far infrared technology.

There are many benefits to using a full spectrum home sauna. Each infrared technology provides different benefits and when combined together, you get the full benefits of this holistic healing method.

Here are the full-spectrum infrared light benefits:

Near Infrared:
  • Cell Health/Immunity
  • Wound Healing
  • Skin Purification
  • Pain Relief
Mid-Infrared:
  • Pain Relief
  • Improved Circulation
  • Weight Loss
Far Infrared:
  • Weight Loss
  • Detoxification
  • Blood Pressure Reduction
  • Relaxation

What happens during an infrared sauna session

When you’re using an infrared sauna, each session should last about 15 to 20 minutes. Of course, the goal is to sweat. It will be warm and should feel relaxing.

During a session, you might notice:

  • Increased sweating, even heavy sweating
  • An increased heart rate
  • A feeling of mental clarity
  • Full body relaxation responses

You might want to sit on a towel to absorb sweat. Most people wear athletic shorts and a loose shirt or bralette. Some people like to use the sauna in the nude. That’s fine too, we just highly recommend the towel in that case!

Once you’re done, take a quick rinse and then drink a glass of water. Some people report feeling a little lightheaded. It’s always a good idea to rest for a little while afterward. It should be pretty easy since you probably feel nice and relaxed.

The benefits of full-spectrum infrared saunas for medical conditions

Improves heart function

There is some evidence that infrared sauna treatments can normalize blood pressure levels, which could effectively treat congestive heart failure. How amazing is that!

Lowers chronic pain

There have also been studies showing that infrared sauna treatments can lower chronic pain, especially from arthritis. It may also help with chronic fatigue syndrome.

Improves blood pressure

Using an infrared sauna has also been shown to lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. In a study of far infrared sauna therapy conducted by the University of Missouri, Kansas City, systolic blood pressure decreased from an average of 130.5 before the study to 124 at the completion of the study.

Helpful for those with diabetes

People who have diabetes often have other complications and symptoms, including pain, chronic fatigue, and heart problems. An infrared sauna can help minimize these symptoms.

Improves muscles aches and joint pain

As part of the deep relaxation and detoxification, an infrared sauna can also help alleviate pain from sore muscles and joint pain.

Detoxification of harmful chemicals

For people who are often exposed to harmful carcinogens and chemicals, an infrared sauna can be an excellent way to purge the body. For example, firefighters are now frequently taking advantage of the benefits of saunas to minimize harm from the exposure of burning buildings.

Reduces inflammation

In addition to pain relief, a 2003 study conducted by the Department of Dermatology and Institute of Medical Research showed that use of near-infrared heat therapy helped the production of white blood cells to alleviate inflammation and reduce swelling.
